Barbell Back Squat is an intermediate compound push using barbell, squat rack. It loads Quadriceps.

Why this lift
The Barbell Back Squat is a intermediate compound push lift. It primarily loads Quadriceps. Glutes, Hamstrings, Abs, Back help. You need barbell, squat rack. Most programs place it near the start of a session, while you are fresh. You may also hear it called Back Squat.
Squat-pattern work is how most programs load the quads with a barbell or a machine. Depth you can control is the part that counts. Once the pattern feels automatic, most programs keep this as a weekly staple.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Quadriceps
- Secondary: Glutes, Hamstrings, Abs, Back
Setup
- Set the bar on the upper traps, hands just outside the shoulders.
- Unrack, step back, feet shoulder-width, toes slightly out.
- Brace the core and take a big breath.
How to do it
- Break at the hips and knees together, sitting down between the legs.
- Descend to at least parallel, knees tracking over the toes.
- Drive through the whole foot to stand tall.
Coaching cues
- Spread the floor with the feet to keep the knees out.
- Brace 360 degrees around the spine before descending.
- Drive the whole foot through the floor on the way up.
Common mistakes
- Knees caving inward. Cue knees out; reduce load if they still collapse.
- Heels rising. Drive through mid-foot; check ankle mobility.
- Lower back rounding at the bottom. Limit depth to a neutral spine.
How to program it
The back squat is the main barbell way to load the quads, with the glutes, hamstrings, and upper back along for the ride. Most programs put it first on a lower-body day. Depth you can own with a neutral spine beats depth you collapse into.
Estimate a training max from a heavy set of 3-5 rather than grinding a single. Work most volume at 70-85% for sets of 3-8. If the knees cave or the heels rise, cut the load and own the pattern before you chase kilos.
Log every working set. MyCoach will see whether the squat is moving and adjust the next session instead of handing you the same template next week.
Estimate a training max with the 1RM calculator from a heavy set of 3–5, then work in percentages instead of guessing the next jump.
